Job Summary The catering intern work experience could progress from a catering server to a waiter captain. The internship provides a minimum of 320 hours of hospitality work experience in catering service.
Uses good judgment when making decisions. Will follow policies as outlined in Student Employee Manual.
Event Service Acts as a functional server for events. Set china, flatware, glassware, and equipment on guest tables as well as any buffet tables. Provide outstanding customer service. Complete back of the house prep while maintaining food safety standards. Serve and bus tables including beverages. Clean room post-event. Trains student catering servers in proper service standards, sanitation practices and basic shift duties. Assist with conducting departmental meetings and training programs as needed. Communicates through completion of paperwork and discussions with other catering personnel.
Event Supervision Works with catering captain, student catering coordinator, or catering coordinator to learn to coach, direct and assign service staff during events. Learn to review routine contracts and staffing for individually assigned events. Checks weekly and daily schedules to determine most efficient use of resources to accomplish tasks.
Assist with adjusting staffing as needed, keeping proper and efficient labor goals in mind related to the service style desired. Gain skills in conducting effective pre-service and post service meetings with service staff about event details and follow-up for improved future service. Customer Service Image Present and promote a positive image of Purdue University through business-like conduct, attitude and appearance.
Customer service-focused, exhibiting helpful, friendly and courteous service. Experience the basics of guest relations under the direction of the catering coordinator. Become confident in approaching the client, reviewing the flow and details of the event, and responding to requests. Greet guests, smile and act in a professional manner at all times, putting the needs of the guests first. Communication/Teamwork Learn how to communicate effectively with production department staff prior to event in order to locate food items and ensure proper food quality and delivery times. Practice checking banquet room or event location to ensure proper set-up needs are met and room diagram is correct and follow-up with a coordinator or manager. Schedule Demonstrate punctual, reliable and consistent attendance. Attend all scheduled meetings and training sessions as directed.
