Basic Qualification Requirement: You must have a four year degree in forestry or a related subject-matter field that included a total of at least 30 semester hours in any combination of biological, physical, or mathematical sciences or engineering, of which at least 24 semester hours of course work were in forestry.

The curriculum must have been sufficiently diversified to include courses in each of the following areas: management of renewable resources, forest biology, and forest resource measurements and inventory.

OR Have a combination of education and experience course equivalent to a major in forestry, or at least 30 semester hours in any combination of biological, physical, or mathematical sciences or engineering, of which at least 24 semester hours were in forestry.

The requirements for diversification of the 24 semester hours in forestry are the same as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To be considered minimally qualified for this position, you must demonstrate that you have the required specialized experience and/or education for the respective grade level in which you are applying: To qualify for GS-09: You must have at least one year of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS-7 grade level in the Federal service performing the following: evaluating environmental assessments to report on public concerns, opportunities, and alternatives; drafting advertisement documents on forestry projects following the appropriate policy and guidance; performing on-the-ground technical evaluations of forest and woodland products; and developing contract stipulations and exhibits to meet special conditions to reduce environmental impacts.

This experience must be comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-7 level in the Federal service.

OR You have 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree.

OR You have a combination of education and specialized experience that may be used to meet total experience requirements.

To qualify for GS-11: You must have at least one year of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS-9 grade level in the Federal service performing the following examples of experience: developing land use plan proposals, alternatives, and modifications for resource management plans and revisions; coordinating and integrating proposals from other specialists on both activity and plan trade-offs, and impacts; analyze issues and concerns for Forestry managers and solicitors, compiling and drafting documents on responses, conclusions and recommendations; consulting with affected parties to determine the significance of concerns and devises potential conflict resolutions; drafting public and press releases on forestry program activities; conducting and/or leading meetings/open houses on forestry program proposals for public review of projects and impact assessment for organization/function compliance; coordinating and collaborating with interest groups and other agencies; performing on-the-ground technical evaluations of forest and woodland products; and negotiating with potential and/or existing contractors for revisions or modifications of existing contracts as necessary to meet organization objectives and necessary resource protection goals.

OR You have 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D.

degree or Ph.D.

or equivalent doctoral degree.

OR You have a combination of education and specialized experience that may be used to meet total experience requirements.

Physical Demands: Work is divided between activity in an office environment and moderate to heavy physical activity in the field.

The ability to safely operate four-wheel drive vehicles and ATVs is necessary.

During winter conditions, operation of over-snow vehicles such as snow machines and the Thiokol are necessary.

The ability to walk over steep, rough, uneven or rocky terrain at extreme elevations is required.

Also hiking through extremely dense brush, logging slash and tree covered terrain, often wet or occasionally snow covered is required.

Working Conditions: Some work is performed in an adequately lighted, heated, and air conditioned office.

However, considerable outdoor activity is required to complete project work.

The outdoor activity involves working in isolated or back country areas, working at high altitudes, working alone, working in extreme weather conditions, and travel in hazardous terrain.

Safety precautions are required, and the employee must wear protective equipment in the forest area.

TIME-IN-GRADE REQUIREMENTS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible.

One year at the next lower grade level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements.

(Must submit your SF-50 that shows Time-in-Grade eligibility and reflects your title, series, and grade.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience.

One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week.

Part-time hours are prorated.

You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies".
