The purpose of this position is to serve as a Health Technician (Emergency Medical Technician) in the Emergency Department.
The primary purpose of the position is to perform basic technical health care extender functions within the emergency medical arena in response to various accidents and other emergencies involving injury and illness.
The incumbent of this position reports to the Supervisory Health Technician (Paramedic).
To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social).
You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience.
You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:nYour resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE (for positions at GS-04 and above): Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists.
Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled.nORnEDUCATION AND TRAINING:nGS-03: Successful completion of one (1) year of study that included study in medical, health or related fields.nGS-04: Successful completion of two (2) years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in subjects related to the position.nGS-05: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position.nORnEXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:nGS-03: Six (6) months of general experience or one (1) year above high school with courses related to the occupation;nGS-04: Six (6) months of general and six (6) months of specialized experience to required or two (2) years above high school with courses related to the occupation;nGS-05: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level or four (4) year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation;nFor GS-06: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least to the GS-05 grade level.nEXAMPLES OF SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE FOR EACH GRADE LEVEL IS LISTED BELOW: EXAMPLE OF SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE FOR THE GS-04: Non-professional work of a technical or support nature in the field of health and medicine such as, recording height/weight; applying sterile dressings; preparing patients for evaluation and treatment; restocking medical supplies; ensuring that medical equipment is in proper operating condition.nEXAMPLE OF SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE FOR THE GS-05: Taking vital signs; determining what the provider needs to treat the patient; performing catheterizations; providing instructions to patients; assisting the provider in medical treatments; collecting a wide variety of specimens.nEXAMPLE OF SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE FOR THE GS-06: Independently conducts a complete assessment, using knowledge of topographic anatomy, major body systems, emergency medicine techniques, ability to sufficiently understand the legal considerations of emergency care.
SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR: The candidate must possess an Emergency Medical Technician certificate from a US State.

Training: Completion of appropriate training such as in-service training programs, training acquired while serving in the Armed Forces, and government-sponsored developmental training programs will be allowed credit on a month-for-month basis, generally through the GS-5 level.
Such training meets general or specialized experience requirements depending upon its applicability.
